Premier HBCU Band Showcase Promotes Education & Leadership.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (August 22, 2016): Excitement is revving up for the 4th annual McDonald’s Queen City Battle of the Bands (QCBOB); hosted at Charlotte’s Memorial Stadium (310 N. Kings Drive.) this Saturday, August 27, 2016 (Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Showtime at 7:00 p.m.).
This year’s showcase will feature eight of the top Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) marching bands from across the country. The line-up includes bands from North Carolina Central University, North Carolina A&T University, Winston-Salem State University, Southern University, Benedict College, Talladega College, Bethune Cookman University, and Tennessee State University.
“The 2016 Queen City Battle of the Bands will feature some of the premier HBCU bands from across the country,” says Derek Webber, CEO, Webber Marketing & Consulting, LLC. “Our goal is to create an event that highlights the extraordinary talents of these students, and shines a light on HBCU marching bands, and the roles they play in educating aspiring musicians and developing future leaders.”
Community engagement is an essential focus of the QCBOB organizers, Webber Marketing & Consulting, LLC. High school students will have an opportunity to attend the HBCU College Recruitment Fair also held on Saturday, preceding the band showcase, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Grady Cole Center (310 Kings Drive). The recruitment fair will feature some of the top 20 HBCU’s in the country who will engage with students interested in learning and receiving information about applying to and attending college. Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, Norfolk State University, Fayetteville State University, Shaw University, Alabama A&M University, and Savannah State University will have representatives in attendance, as well as some of the institutions with bands participating in the showcase.
There will also be on-site voter registration to provide an opportunity to educate attendees on the voting process; share information on new voting processes and law passed, and register voters for the upcoming elections in November.
“When you have an event of this magnitude attracting thousands of attendees, it is essential to provide impactful opportunities that will empower and uplift the communities we serve,” states Derek Webber. “Our job is not complete unless we are giving back. Whether it is in the form of scholarship dollars or with access to knowledge and resources. In our case, we are honored to be able to provide both.”
Organizers raised $70,000 in scholarship dollars for the participating colleges and universities of the 2016 QCBOB.
Last year’s event attracted over 10,000 fans, alumni, students and family members. McDonald’s Queen City Battle of the Bands event over the last three years has generated over $160,000 in scholarships for participating colleges and universities who displayed their school’s dynamic spirit, and music programs during show-stopping performances.
